Kristoff wins stage 12 in Tour de France
Alexander Kristoff has won the 12th stage of the Tour de France in a sprint and Vincenzo Nibali still has the yellow jersey.
Kristoff, a Norwegian with the Katusha team, emerged from the barreling pack which overtook a pair of breakaway riders with less than seven kilometers to go on Thursday.
The mostly flat 185.5-kilometer (115.5-mile) ride from Bourg-en-Bresse to Saint-Etienne in southeastern France was well suited for a sprint finish.
The top standings didn’t change. Nibali holds a lead of 2 minutes, 23 seconds over Australian Richie Porte, and 2:47 over Spaniard Alejandro Valverde.
American rider Andrew Talansky did not start, pulling out due to severe back pain from previous crashes.
CBS won’t dictate use of Redskins name
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.
CBS won’t dictate to its announcers whether or not to use the nickname of Washington’s NFL franchise during televised games this season.
CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus said Thursday he hasn’t told on-air talent such as Jim Nantz and Phil Simms what to say regarding the controversy surround the Redskins’ name.
The network is set to air five Redskins games this season. Team owner Dan Snyder has vowed not to change the name, but is facing unprecedented opposition from those who consider it a racial slur.
McManus told the summer TV critics’ meeting that CBS doesn’t tell its announcers what to say about any topic, including team names.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says the league doesn’t dictate to its broadcast partners how to cover games.
CBS is launching Thursday night coverage of NFL games this fall.
SEC players leave lobbying to others
Southeastern Conference players have mostly been content to let league administrators and coaches take up the drumbeat for NCAA reform.
Not that they’re complaining.
Players at SEC Media Days this week were mostly pleased about the trend toward a few more perks — including scholarships that would offer full cost of attendance. They also admit they’ve already got it pretty good.
SEC commissioner Mike Slive has even said the Big Five conferences could break away from the NCAA if players aren’t compensated more properly.
The life of major college football players and coaches could change drastically once the NCAA and Big Five conferences are done revamping the current system.
