Two Youngstown men died while fishing in a Newton Township pond

Published: Tue, July 15, 2014 @ 12:05 a.m.

Staff report

The body of the 21-year-old son of a man, who died during a fishing trip, was recovered.

The body was found at 8:25 a.m. Monday in a pond off Miller Graber Road, just east of Newton Falls, a Newton Falls emergency dispatcher confirmed.

The son is Anthony Harris Jr., and his 48-year-old father, whose body was found about 7 p.m. Sunday, is Anthony Harris Sr. The two are from Youngstown.

How the two men drowned hasn’t been determined.

The younger Harris is a former football player for Youngstown Christian School, and his father was employed by RG Steel.

The two went fishing about 11 a.m. Saturday.

Two juveniles told law enforcement about 8 p.m. that day that there was a problem after they saw a pickup truck near Rankin Pond and a canoe partially in the water.

Dragging crews from four fire departments found the father’s body about 20 to 30 yards offshore about 7 p.m. Sunday.

Search crews had to stop because of darkness. The search resumed early Monday.

Tip#1 Don't stand in a canoe
Tip#2 If you do stand up, better know how to swim

Panic is the worst thing that can happen in the water. And if you can't swim, then don't go in the water....without wearing a flotation device. It really does save lives!
