Campbell man faces gun charges after traffic stop

CAMPBELL — A Tenney Avenue man faces felony weapons charges following a Friday traffic stop.

City police stopped Abimael Vazquez, 33, shortly after 11 a.m. Friday, after he failed to stop at the intersection of 14th Street and Tremble Avenue.

When police approached the car, Vazquez opened the driver's side door and put both of his hands outside of the car, which, according to a police report, usually indicates that the person is carrying a handgun.

Vazquez told police he did not have a driver's license. Police then discovered Vazquez had an active warrant out of Campbell for violation of a protection order, and he was arrested. A search of the car produced a loaded handgun between the right side of the driver's seat and the center console.

In addition, he is set to appear in Campbell Municipal Court at 9 a.m. Friday to answer to a criminal trespassing charge dating back to December.
