The Canfield 11-12 softball all-stars team went 1-1 on Saturday at the state tournament at Cederquist Park.
The good news: they began the day in the winners bracket.
They bad news: they have to win three straight to claim the state crown.
In their first game, the Canfield all-stars beat Ironton 1-0 behind a complete-game shutout from pitcher Madi Kelly.
The game was scoreless entering the bottom of the sixth, but an RBI single from Jenna Troxil scored Alexis Mettille to win the game for Canfield.
Emily Smith played a great defensive game in center field to help preserve the shutout for Kelly.
With the win, Canfield advanced to the winners bracket final where it faced Tallmadge later in the afternoon on Saturday.
The Canfield all-stars started the game strong and held a 1-0 advantage through four innings. Tallmadge tied the game in the fifth and added two in the sixth.
Canfield cut into the deficit with a run in the sixth, but couldn’t complete the comeback falling 3-2.
Kelly and KaiLi Gross pitched well in defeat. Kelly and Adin Orlovski had the RBIs for Canfield.
With the loss, Canfield falls into the losers bracket final, where it will face Ironton in a rematch.
The win-or-go-home game is scheduled for today at 5 p.m.
The team that advances out of the losers bracket will have to beat Tallmadge twice, with the first game scheduled for Monday.
