Ohio man sentenced for fatal drunken-driving crash

Published: Fri, July 11, 2014 @ 2:40 p.m.

CINCINNATI (AP) — A judge in Cincinnati has sentenced a habitual drunken driver to more than nine years in prison for hitting and killing a schoolteacher riding his bicycle earlier this year.

Police say 51-year-old Todd Shaw had been drinking heavily before he left a bar, got in his car and hit 51-year-old Frederick Carey on Feb. 21. Shaw, who has at least eight drunken-driving arrests since the 1980s, was sentenced Thursday to 9 1/2 years in prison.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Carey was a Cincinnati Country Day School teacher who had just gotten married four months earlier.

The judge said Shaw was driving about 45 mph and was using his phone at the time of the accident. He fled but was arrested at his home the next day.
