CINCINNATI

The leader after the opening round of the 108th Ohio Amateur is Coldstream Country Club.

No fewer than 33 players shot 80 or higher and only six broke par under windy conditions over the course’s rolling 6,975 yards.

Wright State golf coach Pete Samborsky shot 2-under 69 to share the lead with Christopher Sloan and Clark Engle after the first round of the 108th Ohio Amateur on Tuesday.

Three Youngstown State golfers are in contention. Brandon Pluchinsky (72) and Dominic Carano (72) were three shots back. Trevor Jones (74) is five back. Pluchinsky is from North Lima, Carano is from Canfield and Jones is from Poland.

Other locals include Ohio State’s Boo Timko (74) of Girard, Greg Rossi (81) of Poland and Jason McQuown (81) of Poland).

Samborsky, originally from Cincinnati, birdied four of his last seven holes, while both Sloan, a native of Centerville, and Engle, an Ohio State golfer from Springfield, each had five birdies offsetting three bogeys.

Duke’s Michael Ricaurte, Kent State’s Ryan Troyer and Tim Crouch, a former Florida Southern player, were the only other players under par at 70.

The four former winners in the field all fared well.

Defending champion Andrew Dorn shot a 72 as did 1987 winner Peter Hammar, while two-time champ Robert Gerwin and Alan Fadel, who won the Am the last time it was at Coldstream in 1995, each had a 73.

Ryan Reichley of Beavercreek, Tripp French of Dayton and Jack Sparling of Dublin matched par with 71s.

The youngest player in the field, Jack Herceg of Dublin at 14 years and 10 months, shot a 79. The oldest, Cincinnati’s 60-year-old Jeff Sparks, had a 78.

Fadel, who is 59, won the Ohio Mid-Amateur earlier this summer.

Play continues with 18-hole medal-play rounds concluding on Friday. There will be cuts after the second and third rounds.
