Woman, 85, testifies
An 85-year-old Grandville, Mich., woman testified last week that Shawn Jarrett, 50, formerly of Howland Township and Farrell, Pa., politely asked her questions at her back door last month, then pushed his way into the house, took money from her and raped her in the bedroom.
Afterward he told her to clean herself, then kicked her repeatedly and left her on the bathroom floor, she said, according to Fox 17 television station in West Michigan.
The testimony came during a preliminary hearing during which Jarrett’s attorney also asked for an evaluation to determine whether Jarrett is competent to stand trial. Jarrett spent 30 years in prison for killing an elderly woman who lived next door to him in 1982 in Farrell and robbing a 58-year-old woman in Sharon, Pa., two months later.
Bond set in burglary
Bond was set at $7,500 Monday in Warren Municipal Court for William H. Stevanus II, 33, of Douglas Street Northwest and Maryland Street Northeast, who pleaded not guilty to aggravated burglary Monday.
A police report quotes a witness describing Stevanus as driving a pickup truck onto the front yard of a house on Maryland Street Northeast at 11:30 p.m. Friday, almost hitting a man in the yard.
Stevanus then got out of the truck and chased the man into the Maryland Street residence, the witness said. Police were told the incident resulted from a fight over fireworks.
