COLUMBUS (AP) — An Ohio man who is fighting extradition to Albania to face prison on a murder conviction says authorities have got the wrong guy.
An attorney for 41-year-old Altin Hasani, who lives in the Columbus suburb of Groveport, is arguing that his client is not the same man being sought by Albanian authorities. In a federal court hearing Tuesday, Hasani’s attorney called it a “sham proceeding.”
But federal prosecutor Dana Peters says the Albanian government is clear that Hasani is the correct suspect.
The Columbus Dispatch reports the accusation surfaced after Hasani applied to become a U.S. citizen in 2011, and a records check showed an Albanian with that name was convicted of murder in absentia in 1999 and sentenced to 22 years in prison. The judge will rule later.
