Pasture Walk set July 17 in Diamond

Staff report

A pasture walk is planned for 6 p.m. July 17 at Harold and Ben Campbell’s farm, 16200 Palmyra Road.

The walk is presented by the Eastern Ohio Grazing Council in cooperation with the Carroll, Columbiana, Harrison, Jefferson, Mahoning, Stark and Tuscarawas Soil and Water Conservation districts and the Natural Resources Conservation Service. The event is sponsored by Witmer’s Feed and Grain, Carrollton Farmers Exchange, Farm Credit Services of Mid America and Circle L Fence Ltd.

The Campbells own a 400-acre beef farm that is home to approximately 100 cow-calf pairs, 35 yearling replacement heifers and 50 yearling feeders.

There will be a focus on grazing summer annuals, and there will be a chopper-baler demonstration.

Topics explored will include alternative forages from Dennis Brown of Byron Seeds; forage samples, from Brian Beck of Witmer’s Feed and Grain; and soils, from Steve Prebonick, a soil scientist with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Participants are urged to visit with grazing council members, SWCD and NRCS personnel during the social and educational event. Participants also are asked to bring lawn chairs, as well as bug spray. Refreshments will be provided.

Upcoming pasture walks are planned Aug. 28 in Jefferson County and Sept. 25 in Columbiana County.

Registration is requested by Monday. For information, call the Carroll SWCD at 330-627-9852.
