Published: Tue, July 8, 2014 @ 9:29 p.m.

CANFIELD

First Energy reported that 623 customers in Mahoning County remained without power as of about 9:15 pm. after this afternoon’s storms.

Of those, 313 are in Canfield City, 238 are in Canfield Township and 22 are in Ellsworth Township, where the National Weather Service confirmed a tornado touched down.

Fewer than 15 customers remained without power in each of Austintown, Boardman, Struthers and Youngstown, with fewer than five customers without power in Campbell.

Brian Mitchell, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Cleveland, said the twister was an EF1 tornado. Tornados are categorized on a scale of EF0 to EF5 so the one that swept through the area was the second lowest.

Mitchell said the tornado damaged about 10 homes or garages, but most of the damage was done to trees.
