YOUNGSTOWN

Police arrested a man and a woman Sunday afternoon who reports said took the woman’s child with them to buy and use heroin in two separate cars.

Christopher Uscianowski, 26, of Unity Road in New Springfield, was booked into the Mahoning County jail on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, and Ashley Leonard, 23, of Dushane Street in New Castle, Pa., was booked into the jail on a charge of child endangering.

Reports said officers were called to Ipes Park on East Midlothian Boulevard about 5:20 p.m. Sunday by firefighters at Station 9, which is right next to the park. Reports said the firefighters told police they saw a man and a woman acting very erratically, and they had a young child with them.

When officers arrived, they found Leonard having trouble standing up, and she fell down at least three times, reports said. The firefighters told officers they saw Leonard and Uscianowski in Leonard’s car passing something back and forth between them and a young child was in the car with them.

Reports said Leonard had a needle mark on her arm but told officers she had gotten blood work the night before. Uscianowski also had a needle mark, reports said.

Uscianowski told officers he had several needles in the car he was driving, and police found three needles in the center console, reports said. Reports said the pair went to a home on the West Side to buy heroin and then took the heroin in one of the cars with the child inside the car with them.

Uscianowski said Leonard gave him the needles to put in his car before police arrived, reports said.

A worker from the Mahoning County Children Services Board was called to take custody of the child. Reports did not list an age or gender for the child.
