AUSTINTOWN

Mahoning County Law Enforcement Task Force officers negotiated with a resident for several hours early Friday after they arrived at his home to arrest him in the assault of his 4-year-old son.

John Andrei Jr., 31, of 6935 Kirk Road, was arrested at 2:58 a.m. Friday. He is charged with felonious assault, domestic violence and inducing panic.

The boy’s mother came home from work Thursday night, noticed the child’s injuries and took him to St. Elizabeth Heath Center. Once there, police were contacted.

Township Lt. Mark Skowron said, “There was a lot of handprints.”

He continued, “The mother was very cooperative and signed a form of domestic-violence for the child.” He added that the boy was in stable condition later Friday.

The mother told police the boy had been under Andrei’s care, Skowron said.

The charges against Andrei “rose to the level of felonious assault because of the age of the child and bruising,” Skowron said.

Officers then went to arrest Andrei at his home, and saw him in his garage holding a large butcher-type knife, Skowron said.

But Andrei went back inside the residence.

Police went inside to locate him, but an officer saw an empty gun case on a bed, so they left and called in the task force’s crisis-response team to assist.

After 21/2 hours of negotiation led by an Austintown detective, Andrei came out.

Andrei has a criminal history, according to online court records. He was found guilty of disorderly conduct in 2013 and domestic violence in 2012, and pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of failure to comply in a hit and run incident in 2010, all in Austintown. He also served three days in jail for operating a vehicle under the influence in 2004 through the Ohio State Highway Patrol, and five days on a second OVI from OSHP in 2006.

Friday, township police also arrested Andrei’s neighbor, John Poschner, after he tried to help negotiate, and would not stop, despite police orders. Authorities surrounded Poschner, and he tried to fight them off. He was booked into jail and released Friday.
