Fighting in Ukraine kills 9 soldiers

KIEV, Ukraine

Fighting in eastern Ukraine left at least nine Ukrainian soldiers dead Friday, as government troops pressed their offensive against pro-Russian insurgents using heavy artillery and combat jets and prospects of a truce appeared dim.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said Ukraine was ready to conduct another round of talks between representatives from Ukraine, Russia and the rebels today, but didn’t name their venue. Two previous rounds of such negotiations during a 10-day cease-fire have yielded no visible progress, but they brought the warring parties together for the first time.

Video shows officer punching woman

LOS ANGELES

The California Highway Patrol said Friday it is investigating video of one of its officers straddling a woman and punching her in the head as she lay on the shoulder of a Los Angeles freeway.

The woman had been walking on Interstate 10 west of downtown LA, endangering herself and people in traffic, and the officer was trying to restrain her, CHP Assistant Chief Chris O’Quinn said at a news conference.

Passing Driver David Diaz recorded the Tuesday incident and provided it to TV stations.

Suspect arrested in Bourbon St. shootings

NEW ORLEANS

A 20-year-old man was arrested Friday in connection with a gunfight that erupted on Bourbon Street, killing one bystander and wounding nine others on the thoroughfare of nightspots that is one of New Orleans’ biggest tourist draws.

Police chief Ronal Serpas said Trung T. Le was arrested Friday afternoon in Mississippi. He will be extradited to Louisiana, where he faces one charge of first-degree murder and nine charges of attempted first-degree murder.

Le, who turns 21 in August, is from the city of Belle Chasse, near New Orleans.

Police said Le is believed to have fired the first shot in an exchange of gunfire that shattered the good-time atmosphere early Sunday in the French Quarter. Serpas said police are still working to identify another person involved in the gunfight.

Bear attacks jogger

COLUMBIA FALLS, Mont.

State wildlife officials are trying to trap a bear that attacked a female jogger and her dogs on U.S. Forest Service land in northwestern Montana.

Initial reports indicate the bear first attacked the woman’s dogs and then went after her late Thursday morning north of Columbia Falls. The bear then left the area.

Fish, Wildlife and Parks investigator Brian Sommers says the woman suffered several bites and claw wounds. She was treated and released from the hospital in Whitefish.

At 116, Ark. woman is oldest American

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.

A south Arkansas woman celebrated her 116th birthday Friday with cake, a party and a new title — she’s now officially the oldest confirmed living American and second-oldest person in the world, the Gerontology Research Group said.

Gertrude Weaver spent her birthday at home at Silver Oaks Health and Rehabilitation in Camden, about 100 miles southwest of Little Rock.

This year’s festivities included the new award from the Gerontology Research Group, which analyzed U.S. Census records to determine that Weaver is the oldest living American, rather than 115-year-old Jeralean Talley, who was born in 1899.
