Summer Wise started her business out of her home with just three shirts, and within eight years, she progressed to two storefronts.
Her second storefront for Trendy, a boutique-style shop inspired by her own style, opened in May on U.S. Route 224 in the city.
“You always dream it, and I feel very blessed,” Wise said. “I hope to keep growing.”
Trendy began in 2006 out of Wise’s house in New Castle, Pa. She had been in pharmaceutical sales after receiving her degree in biology but always had an eye for fashion.
She often styled people and realized it was difficult to find pieces she liked, so she decided to start her own business to find the pieces she liked at retailer markets.
“I stayed small, and I was very strategic about when I wanted to grow,” Wise said.
After creating a large- enough customer base, she decided it was time to open a store in 2012 in New Castle with clothing she picked out at large markets of clothing retailers in New York City and Los Angeles. She converted an old garage into a Trendy store last year and decided to add the Canfield location this year.
“Everything is a risk,” she said. “I had a decent flow of clientele here.”
Wise hand-picks the articles of clothing she carries, and her designers in the Pittsburgh area operate mobile stores. She since has closed the New Castle store and uses it for inventory storage.
Although her business has changed over the years, her style and the one-on-one shopping experience have not.
“I definitely stick with a specific style,” Wise said. “I do carry a little of everything. I am so specific to what I need and what I would do.”
Prices at Trendy run $30 to $70 for shirts, and dresses sell for $50 to $80. Summer sales are in progress.
Hours at the Canfield location — 4358 Boardman-Canfield Road — are noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, noon to 5 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The store is closed Sunday through Tuesday. Customers also can shop online at www.sosotrendy.com.
