Kids have chance to learn about boats, cars

Staff report

The YWCA Discovery Place will offer a Summer Manufacturing Institute for children in grades four through six, and registration is still open.

The institute will explore boats from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 14 to 18. Registration is required by Monday.

Cars will be explored from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 21 to 25, and registration is required by July 14.

During the institute, the children will meet each morning at the YWCA, 25 W. Rayen Ave. There, children will receive an introduction to safety, learn from manufacturing professionals and build a model boat or car. They also will participate in numerous field trips to manufacturing plants, as well as design challenges at OH WOW! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology on West Federal Street downtown.

At the end of each week is a showcase of the week’s design projects at an open house for family and friends.

Children can participate in one or both camps.

Cost is $125, which includes a breakfast and lunch each day. Partial or full scholarships are available to those who qualify.

For information or to register, contact Jennie Andrews at 330-746-6361.

The Summer Manufacturing Institute is a collaborative project between the Mahoning Valley Manufacturer’s Coalition, the OH-Penn Partnership, OH WOW!, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown’s office, Youngstown City Schools and the YWCA of Youngstown.
