Youngstown urban garden on South Side vying for grant

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Inner City Garden on the city’s South Side is among 136 neighborhood gardens vying for three $15,000 grants from Nature’s Path Gardens for Good.

The online contest ends at 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

There are 136 entries in the United States and Canada in the contest.

The Youngstown Inner City Garden, also called the Youngstown Food Forest, was established last year at 3406 Hillman St., a vacant property cleaned by Mason Carratt of Idlewood Avenue, who’s backyard abuts it.

Carratt cleaned up the illegal dump site and created the garden, which provides free food and vegetables to anyone. The garden project expanded across the street.

Those wanting to vote for the garden can go to:, click on “Love It,” fill out a short registration form or log-in with your Facebook account.

As of late today, the Youngstown garden was in the middle of the pack with 161 votes.
