The Youngstown State University-Ohio Education Association, the union that represents YSU’s 367 faculty members, is accepting applications for the organization’s Academic YSU-OEA Union Heritage Scholarship.

The $1,000 stipend is awarded annually to a student affiliated with organized labor and may be used to defray the cost of tuition, fees or books.

Members of YSU-OEA’s executive board will review all applications submitted and select the recipient of the scholarship in the spring. Deadline for submitting applications is Feb. 1.

“We are both pleased and proud to offer this scholarship to a student who has ties to the labor movement,” YSU-OEA President Annette Burden said. “People who have direct ties to the labor movement have a unique understanding of the vital role unions play in our community, state and nation. We created the scholarship to ensure that students who appreciate the benefits of union membership have the opportunity to add their perspective to classroom discussions during their years at YSU.”

Sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students currently enrolled in YSU who are or were members of a union for two or more years or who have a family member who is or was a member for five years or more are eligible to apply for the Union Heritage Scholarship.

Applicants also must meet the following grade-point-average requirements:

Sophomores: GPA of 2.75 or higher, 31 semester hours completed.

Juniors: GPA of 3.25 or higher, 62 semester hours completed.

Seniors: GPA of 3.5 or higher, 93 semester hours completed.

Graduate students: GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Burden said that the Academic YSU-OEA Union Heritage Scholarship is need-based, so applicants must have completed and submitted a Free Application for Federal Student Aid form to YSU’s Financial Aid Office in order to be considered.

Applications may be obtained online at http://cfweb.cc.ysu.edu/finaid/scholar/est_scholar_data.cfm?scholar_ID=558.
