Pieces of a Dream tops jazz charts
Pieces of a Dream’s current single, “Stepper’s D Lite,” has hit the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s smooth jazz chart.
It’s a first for the smooth jazz act whose co-leader is James Lloyd of Canfield.
Lloyd wrote the song — which appears on POAD’s new album, “In the Moment” — with Robert “Boots” Pickard of Youngstown. “In the Moment,” the band’s 20th album, is sitting atop the smoothjazz.com chart.
Lloyd has penned No. 1 songs before, but for other artists (Walter Beasley and Najee). The highest a Pieces song had previously reached is No. 2.
“I feel awesome about it,” said Lloyd. “[Reaching the top spot] has been elusive.”
Pieces of a Dream consists of Lloyd, who plays keys, and drummer Curtis Harmon of Philadelphia. The act formed in 1976 in that city and achieved international status in the ’80s, after being signed by and touring with the late jazz legend Grover Washington Jr.
Lloyd, who also works as a recording engineer out of his home studio, said the act is quiet for now but is readying for the summer season. Pieces’ next scheduled area show will be March 21 at The Tangier in Akron.
