Free Youth leadership workshop Jan. 18

Jack and Jill of America Inc., Eastern Gateway Community College and TRIO Educational Opportunity Center will participate in the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend activities by hosting the Second Youth Leadership Workshop Saturday.

TRIO is a group of federal programs that aims to bolster access to higher education for economically disadvantaged students. Youth age 9 to 18 are encouraged to attend the free workshop from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the college’s Valley Center, 101 E. Federal St.

“Our organizations want to better prepare the youth of Mahoning and Trumbull counties for life after high school, focusing particularly on life skills that are ethical in nature such as taking responsibility for their decisions, making difficult moral choices, developing emotional intelligence, fostering appropriate relationships with others and contributing to the communities in which they live as adults,” said Dorothy Collins, dean of TRIO programs and academic advising.

The sessions will include college preparation, leadership, healthy lifestyles, networking/social media, legislative advocacy, and financial literacy. A parent information session from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. will address these issues to enhance their skills as parents, Collins said.

Reservations are required by calling 330.480.0726 Ext. 3115 or emailing
