Youngstown Symphony orchestra Symphony, Step Afrika dancers will team up for a unique concert

“Symphony in Step,” a concert featuring the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and the Step Afrika dance troupe, has been rescheduled for 8 p.m. March 22 at Powers Auditorium.

The YSO, under the direction of Randall Craig Fleischer, will present a program that includes an original selection by Fleischer titled “Symphony in Step.” Step Afrika will accompany the music with dance.

The Washington-based troupe is the only professional dance company in the world performing traditional stepping, and “Symphony in Step” is the first merger of stepping and classical music.

Step Afrika explores the traditions of contemporary and traditional stepping dance styles and songs as well as tap and slam poetry in this show.

Stepping emphasizes footwork and percussive rhythms.

Also performing at the March 22 concert will be the Community Gospel Choir, under the direction of Robert Mitchell Jr.
