1759: The first American life insurance corporation, for “poor and distressed” Presbyterian ministers and their widows and children, is chartered in Philadelphia.

1805: The Michigan Territory is created by an act of Congress.

1861: Alabama becomes the fourth state to withdraw from the Union.

1908: President Theodore Roosevelt proclaims the Grand Canyon a National Monument (it becomes a national park in 1919).

1913: The first enclosed sedan-type automobile, a Hudson, goes on display at the 13th National Automobile Show in New York.

1927: The creation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is proposed during a dinner of Hollywood luminaries at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles.

1935: Aviator Amelia Earhart begins an 18-hour trip from Honolulu to Oakland, Calif., that makes her the first person to fly solo across any part of the Pacific Ocean.

1989: Two Michigan businessmen and a company plead guilty to charges from a scheme in which tooling suppliers paid kickbacks to a Packard Electric employee to secure contracts with the Warren-based General Motors division.

Cleveland Browns Quarterback Bernie Kosar files suit in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court against MacGregor Promotion Corp. of New Jersey claiming he has not been paid for his endorsement of footballs.

Edna Pincham, 51-year-old assistant to Mayor Patrick J. Ungaro, is elected president of the Youngstown Board of Education.

1974: Mary Limperos, 44, is seriously wounded when a robber’s gun discharges during a struggle with her father,-in-law, Anthony Limperos, the owner of Tony’s Superette at 1407 Highland Ave. SE in Warren.

Leigh Brackett, one of Hollywood’s most successful screenwriters who has spent much of the last 20 years in Kinsman in northern Trumbull County, tells Vindicator feature writer Emily Webster that she burned the manuscripts of most of her earliest works, written in longhand starting when she was 13. “No one could read them, but I still could, so I burned ’em.”

A second suspect in the Christmas Eve rape of a 17-year-old South Side girl is charged with rape after the victim spotted him in the courtroom as a spectator at the hearing of a man already charged in the case.

1964: Rifles and shotguns valued at $800 are taken in a burglary at the Western Auto Co. store in the Lincoln Knolls Plaza on McCartney Road.

Dick Schwartz, 25, an Ursuline High graduate and the 1958 Ohio Amateur golf champion, is turning pro and will become assistant to Bob Pemberton at the Catwaba Cliff Golf Club in Port Clinton, Ohio.

1939: Republican county Chairman Thad C. Rose appoints three Republicans to the Old Age Pension office in Youngstown and two to local liquor- store positions .

Under a redistricting bill introduced in the Ohio Legislature, the 19th Congressional District, the largest in the state with all of Ashtabula, Trumbull and Mahoning counties in its boundaries, would be reduced with the shifting of Ashtabula to a new 24th District.

South High School’s legendary coach, Russell G. “Busty” Ashbaugh, resigns at the close of his 24th season as coach of the Red and Blue football squad. He said his health is comparatively good, but not sufficient to meet the demands of coaching. He will continue as a teacher.
