Campbell police arrest Hubbard man on drug charges

Staff report

A Hubbard man will next answer to two misdemeanor drug charges in Campbell Municipal Court at 9 a.m. May 27.

Chad Smith, 42, of McClure Road, made an initial appearance in city court Friday for possession of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia, after police found 15 grams of suspected marijuana in the trunk of his car shortly after 1:30 a.m. Friday.

Around the same time, police also arrested Henry Butch Smith Jr., 52, of East 55th Street in Cleveland, with an active felony drug warrant out of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Police first noticed Henry Butch Smith Jr. walking on Madison Street in the midst of a snowstorm. As officers turned their cruiser around to investigate, they spotted another man — later identified as Chad Smith — near what appeared to be a disabled car on Wilson Avenue.

When Chad Smith saw police approaching, however, he slammed the car’s trunk shut and ran into the middle of the street, telling police that he’d run out of gas.

Chad Smith initially told police that he was alone, though Henry Butch Smith Jr. said the two were together. Soon afterward, Chad Smith admitted that someone else had been with him, but that because this person had a warrant out for his arrest, tried to flee before police arrived.

Police then identified Henry Butch Smith Jr. and arrested him for the active warrant. He was transported to the county jail pending extradition.

While searching the car, police found the 15 grams of suspected marijuana, along with loose marijuana in the car’s center console. Chad Smith was held in city jail on a $3,250 bond, 10 percent cash or surety, on charges of possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia. He posted bond and was released from police custody.
