The local chapter of the NAACP is attempting to get more teens and young adults involved in its youth unit.
The Youngstown Youth Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has not functioned as a unit for approximately 20 years, said Steven E. Mickel, local chapter president.
It was reactivated recently as a result of the efforts of specific organizations and individuals within the city, Mickel added.
The first meeting of the re-formed youth chapter will be at noon Jan. 18 at Centenary United Methodist Church, 1413 Belmont Ave.
The topics of discussion will range from the history of the NAACP, an understanding of the organization’s role in the community, as well as an open dialogue on community issues relevant to the city’s youths. All youths are encouraged to attend.
