1 killed, 2 injured in Saturday fire


A Shenango Township man was killed and two others injured after a Saturday evening garage explosion.

The explosion occurred shortly before 6 p.m. at a Bedford Road home, according to Vindicator broadcast partner 21 WFMJ TV.

Neighbors told the station the man was working on snowmobiles with a friend in the garage before the explosion. The man’s son suffered burns when he tried to help the two men and is being treated at a local hospital.

The surviving man who was in the garage at the time of the explosion was transported by helicopter to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown with serious burns, TV 21 reported.

The men’s identities and cause of the explosion haven’t been released.

Sales tax hearings are scheduled


Mahoning County commissioners will conduct two hearings on their May 6 ballot proposal to renew a 0.50-percent sales tax continuously and to add a new 0.25-percent sales tax for five years. The hearings will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front St., and at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 13 in the commissioners’ meeting room in the county courthouse basement.
