Published: Sat, January 4, 2014 @ 6:44 p.m.

Mahoning County commissioners will conduct two hearings on their May 6 ballot proposal to renew a 0.50-percent sales tax continuously and to add a new 0.25-percent sales tax for five years.

The hearings will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front St., and at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 13 in the commissioners’ meeting room in the county courthouse basement.

>>renew a 0.50-percent sales tax continuously<<

You see, folks, this is what happens with a "temporary tax."

After it has been in place for a few years and the politicians think everyone is used to it, they want to make it permanent.

Never vote to make such taxes permanent. Renew only after review. See how the revenue was spent before further approval.

Another quarter percent? It keeps going up because the powers that be can't say no and reduce programs for their favorite constituents and business associates.

Notice the additional tax is for 5 years. At the end of that period, they'll ask that it too be made permanent. This is how we arrive at the excessive tax levels now suffered.
