YOUNGSTOWN

Orientation for new students at Eastern Gateway Community College will be Tuesday at the college’s Valley Center, 101 E. Federal St.

Orientation will help students prepare for classes that start Jan. 13. Two-hour sessions for new students start every half-hour from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Students must register for either the morning or evening session by calling 330-480-0726.

Because of space constraints, only students will be permitted to attend the sessions.

Students will learn about academic advising, student services, financial aid/billing and student computer and email accounts. Refreshments will be served.

New students attending will be entered in a drawing for an iPad.

The Valley Center also will host special tour, explore, enroll days for spring registration. Registration is open daily Monday through Friday, but special tour, explore and enroll events at the Valley Center are open to students and their families from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today and next Saturday and from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday and Jan. 13.

Tours of the Valley Center will include classrooms, computer labs, admissions, financial aid and advising offices. Participants will be able to explore college courses and programs of study and admissions and advising staff will be available to discuss student options.

Enrolling for spring classes will conclude the event. Interested students may apply to the college.

Registration requirements include a high-school or GED transcript and any previous college transcript. After applying, the student takes free placement testing, which helps the student and academic advisor determine the best courses to take when starting college.

If the student attended another college, testing may be waived when showing the college transcript.

After testing, the student will meet with an academic adviser to plan courses for the chosen major and enroll in classes. Students may take classes at the Valley Center, other EGCC locations or online.

Students may start the financial-aid process by bringing their 2012 tax statements.

Time remains for registration for spring semester, but students are urged to stop at the Valley Center soon. The class schedule is available at www.egcc.edu.
