Whispering Pines District of the Greater Western Reserve Council, Boy Scouts of America is sponsoring its annual Boy Scout Klondike Derby the weekend of Jan. 10 - 12 at Camp Stambaugh, located at 3712 Leffingwell Road in Canfield. The derby will be on Jan. 11 beginning at 8:30 a.m. and throughout the afternoon until 5 p.m.
The derby is tuned to competition between Troop Patrols involving all Boy Scout Troops in Mahoning County and Hubbard. Each troop will be composed of one or more patrols with six to eight scouts in each patrol.More than 200 scouts and 50 adult leaders and staff will be participating in this winter event.
This year’s Klondike is being hosted by Boy Scout Troops 60 of Boardman.
Patrols will compete against each other at seven stations along the Yukon trail involving skills that they have learned in scouting. Stations such as Anchorage, Fairbanks, Cheekachoo, Sitka, Kodiak, Grizzley and Whitehorse (all reminiscent of the Klondike Gold rush days in Alaska) will test what they have learned and how well they work together as a team. Each station involves a different skill which includes cooking, signaling, sled race, map and compas, mule pull and log hoist, first aid and fire building.
Scout troops will be camping outdoors, as well as utilizing cabins, at the camp. They will be doing all of their own cooking and the scouts have been trained in winter camping. They will use this opportunity to sharpen their skills in a safe environment no matter what the weather brings.
