Student newspaper: YSU's Dunn top contender for Illinois job

YOUNGSTOWN Randy Dunn, who has been president of Youngstown State University only since July 13, 2013, is reported to be the front-runner to be named president of Southern Illinois University.

According to the "Daily Egyptian, SIU's student newspaper, the university's Board of Trustees chose its new president Thursday Feb. 13 and is expected to announce its pick at 2 p.m. Monday Feb. 17.

Attempts to reach Dunn and Dr. Sudershan Garg, chairman of the YSU Board of Trustees, to confirm the story, were unsuccessful.

Ron Cole, manager of news and information services at YSU, said he contacted Dunn's chief of staff, Shannon Tirone, whom he said is trying to reach Dunn for more information. Cole said he has no information beyond what was in the "Daily Egyptian."

Former Ohio Sen. Harry Meshel, a member of the YSU board, said he was unsuccessful in reaching Dunn. However, Meshel said he hopes the story is not true.

"I really like Dunn, and feel the rest of the board shares my opinion," Meshel said.

This is, as the old MasterCard ads used to say, priceless. If true, it's fraud in the first degree. The first few months for any out of town executive type is always a "listening session" as in, "I'll spend some time getting to know everybody and listening to what they have to say". In effect, it's getting paid big bucks to wander around and glad hand. So now, after the well paid several months "getting to know everybody" he applies at another university? He really ought to charged with fraud. Of course that can't happen, but for God's sake can the trustees put something in the next contract penalizing this sort of BS. Something like a return of the moving expenses if you don't stay two years - how hard would that be to add?

If he's leaving because he doesn't like this place, it's because of the kinds of "BS" spouted by you two. He's probably made this decision in large part because he started out at SIU and feels a connection to the place. In other words, he wants to go home. Is it frustrating that he came to YSU most likely knowing he'd like to be elsewhere? Sure. Is he some kind of fraudster or pawn in somebody else's fraud? I don't think so. Come off it, people.

No, your comment is total bullsh!t. When Dunn was interviewed for theYSU position, he would have been asked by the committee about such things as his immediate plans for leading the university as president plus his personal intentions for moving to the Y-town area. In the intervening seven months, he has had many meetings with the trustees. So, if none of the board knew this was his intention, then "fraud" would most certainly fit his behavior. If he has at least interviewed for the position, I would think termination is warranted. If he takes the position, there should be a clause in his contract for a buyout.

billdog, You may be right-but upon getting the YSU job, he should have bowed out of the other job search or at least made it clear to the Board of Trustees that he was still a candidate. Also, its telling that his facebook page is deleted, he did not show up for a scheduled speech this morning and he's not returning phone calls from his own Board members and YSU's information officer? One phone call from him last night would have killed all of the speculation.

Seeing as how the SIU Presidential Search Committee was not organized until last fall (while he was already under a YSU contract), billdog's post is BS. Seems to me that he either sought out the position by applying or was contacted by their headhunter confidentially about taking the position. But, yes, he could have killed the speculation and the fact that the university cannot contact him is telling.

so dunn goes to a better place, ok- fine. but the YSU TRUSTEES ARE MORONS !!! they are just livin large at the taxpayers expense. the " treats and perks " they receive should be made public and taxed. all they can do is stuff that is either self- serving, wrong or both. what a collection - they should be on the youngstown school board- they would fit right in - city council too !

The best thing for YSU is to pick the best in house local candidate. While I am not impressed by his ability to be Athletic Director, the best and most loyal candidate for President of YSU is Ron Strollo. He's the best fund raiser, he's dedicated to the University, he's got plenty of management experience, he's not going to leave YSU for greener pastures, he can better influence everything YSU including sports as President, he's bright enough, he's local from head to toe, and he loves the University and the community. I say be done with the stupidity of the board and pick the best choice, I nominate Ron Strollo. Period.

Seriously, Ron Strollo? Don't even know where to begin with that...The last thing YSU needs is another internal candidate. The place is falling apart, and desperately needs a new Board of Trustees and new perspective. Dunn may have turned out to be a bust but that should in no way lead to an in-house hire! Real universities don't do this and for good reason. There is nothing wrong with using the post as a "stepping stone" if it yields great vision and progress. Yeah Dunn's actions (if true) are pretty awful but he's the exception not the rule for external hires. Give me a hotshot pres from somewhere outside the Valley vortex any day--let him or her chart a vision make some changes and lay a real foundation--is they move on after the contract, so be it.
