Youngstown Christian in North Coast League

Youngstown Christian School has been unanimously accepted as a member of the North Coast League. The league currently includes 13 Catholic high schools in Northeast Ohio split into two divisions.

Youngstown Christian, which is not a Catholic school, is expected to join the White Division for smaller schools. Other schools in the division are Warren JFK, St. Thomas Aquinas and Cleveland area schools Central Catholic, Holy Name, Trinity and Villa Angela-St. Joseph.

Mooney grad finishes 100-mile trail race

THORNTON, COLO.

Cardinal Mooney High graduate Val Zajac finished 199th out of 358 finishers in last week’s Leadville Trail 100, a 100-mile trail race.

Zajac finished in 28 hours and 34 minutes to finish 22nd out of 52 females. The race began with more than 700 runners, with about half failing to finish.

On June 21, Zajac finished the Bighorn 50-miler. She had previously failed to finish both races.

Scramble benefits scholarshp fund

Deer Creek Golf Course is the host of the fourth annual Ron Meiss Jr. Memorial Scramble Aug. 30. The four-person scramble has an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.

A graduate of Hermitage High, Meiss Jr. was a teacher in Farrell Schools. He passed away in 2011 and a scholarship fund to assist local college students was founded in his name.

Racer runs at both Michigan and Sharon

Jimmy Weller had one of the busiest days of his racing career Saturday as he took on the challenge of racing in both the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series at Michigan International Speedway and the big block dirt modified division at Sharon Speedway in Hartford.

Weller made his first career start at Michigan and finished 24th after his car was retired with a mechanical failure. Weller finished fourth in his race at Sharon Speedway after making the 230-mile trip from Michigan.

Cardinals DT Dockett hurt, out for season

GLENDALE, Ariz.

Arizona Cardinals defensive tackle Darnell Dockett has torn the ACL in his right knee during practice and will undergo season-ending surgery. The team says the extent of the injury was revealed in an MRI on Monday.

The 6-foot-4, 290-pound Dockett has missed only two games in 10 NFL seasons.

Oklahoma RB Mixon suspended for season

NORMAN, Okla.

Oklahoma has suspended freshman running back Joe Mixon for the season after he pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor charge of assault. Mixon, one of the nation’s top recruits and a potential starter, is accused of knocking a woman unconscious with a punch and breaking several bones in her face last month.

Nadal won’t defend US Open because of wrist

Reigning champion Rafael Nadal pulled out of the U.S. Open because of an injury for the second time in three years Monday. Nadal announced his withdrawal, blamed on a bad right wrist, one week before play begins at Flushing Meadows. Nadal is 44-8 with four titles in 2014.
