Obama welcomes 8,000 Gay Games athletes to Cleveland

Opening ceremonies took place Saturday night

CLEVELAND

President Barack Obama helped start off the international Gay Games in northeastern Ohio in a surprise video message shown at the games’ opening ceremonies.

Obama welcomed athletes, coaches, families and spectators from around the world to Ohio and the United States as the event began Saturday evening with ceremonies at Quicken Loans Arena downtown.

The president said the United States has come a long way in its commitment to equal rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people. He also noted some athletes come from places where publicly acknowledging their sexual orientation can put them at risk. He affirmed U.S. commitment to standing “with you and for your human rights.”

Performers Lance Bass and the Pointer Sisters helped kick off the weeklong games, where about 8,000 people are registered to participate in activities and competitions in Cleveland and Akron.

Sorry but you're either born that way or you're not. "Recruitment" has nothing to do with it.

To be perfectly honest i really wouldn't care one way or the other but since Homosexuals irritate the Religious Right so much I can't resist supporting them if for no other reason.

I could care less about ones sexual orientation but this makes no sense. I'm sure if somebody organized a Straight Games, the repercussions would amount to law suites, media blitz and other nonsense. This population has no restrictions limiting their abilities. They require no special circumstances to even consider such an event.

The question I have is, do you have to prove you are homosexual to participate? If so, how do you prove you are homosexual? Is it by your actions or is testimony (funny word, here) sufficient? Surely, if you are born a homosexual, there must be a genetic test that can prove it, correct?

I'm not gay and don't know if I'd "qualify" to be in the races, but I'd be careful bending over to tie my running shoes. Maybe that's how you prove that your qualified......just saying.

Actually about 10% of the athletes that compete are straight. Probably a good idea to, I dunno, learn a little about the games before making ignorant comments. And just so we're on the same page, I'm using the traditional definition of the word ignorant: "lacking knowledge or information as to a particular subject or fact." I say that because too many people get offended by almost every word tossed their way. If people spent more time educating themselves, instead of jumping to be the first to cry foul, think of all the meaningful dialogues that could be had. Sexual orientation may or may not be a choice but ignorance certainly is.

"All that remains now is to get Jerry Sandusky released from prison so that he can MC the event."

I don't understand this comment. Why would anyone believe a child molester should be at these games?

hmm. just to ponder this. Since many clergy men are the ones guilty of corrupting our innocent young through molestation, is it the religious right who are trying to promote homosexuality? I guess they would be based on JS's comments.

This is what he wants to see as a President and to be known for. He is also having the Gay pride flag under all US embassies in every country. He wants the world to see that we except this new way of thinking. Maybe he is telling us something?

I don't understand why gays would feel they are entitled to have their own games? They made a choice to contribute to the lifestyle that they chose, to me thats not an accomplishment. It's not like they cured cancer, ended mental illness, or found the answer to end world hunger. The world gets goofier every day and were accepting it. Someone needs to say 'go do your thing but don't think your going to push it on everyone else'.

Yes, yes, but the gays are promoting mental illness! Today there is no stigma attached to it.
