Three teens told police they were “bored and stupid” after being arrested Thursday afternoon after several cars traveling on Interstate 680 south were hit with paintballs, reports said.
The three 16-year-olds were taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center on charges of discharging a firearm within city limits and vandalism.
Officers were called to the area around the Midlothian Boulevard exit on the interstate about 4 p.m. after dispatchers received calls from at least four people saying their vehicles were hit with orange paintballs.
An officer said he pulled over to the side of the freeway and heard paintballs whizzing by his cruiser from a wooded area. He also noticed the concrete median was covered in orange paint splatters, reports said.
The officer made his way through the wooded area and saw three males aiming paintball guns at the freeway, reports said. The officer told them to put their guns down, and they did. One of them started to run away but stopped after his friends told him to come back, reports said.
Reports said the three admitted shooting, saying they were “bored and stupid.”
One victim came to the scene and said he had two children, ages 6 and 4, in his car when it was hit twice. The man said he was not sure what hit his car and he panicked, reports said.
The car of an off-duty deputy sheriff also was struck as was a city vehicle being driven by the city’s housing code enforcement officer, reports said.
