Ohio agents take over probe of Walmart shooting

BEAVERCREEK, Ohio (AP) — Ohio’s crime bureau has taken over investigation of the fatal police shooting of a man in suburban Dayton Walmart store.

Jill Del Greco, spokeswoman for the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, says Beavercreek’s police chief requested that BCI act as independent investigator in the case. When done, BCI will turn its findings over to the Montgomery County prosecutor.

Police have said the 22-year-old man waved a rifle at customers and was fatally shot Tuesday night when he wouldn’t drop the weapon. John Crawford of suburban Cincinnati died at a hospital.

Del Greco declined comment today on contentions by Crawford family members and friends that his gun was a toy. She said that’s part of the investigation.

Authorities say a 37-year-old female customer also died after suffering a medical problem during store evacuation.
