On June 1, the Austintown Optimist Club hosted its 34th annual fishing derby for special needs students of Mahoning County.
The event took place at the Lake Milton Fish and Game Club with many members of the game club and the Austintown Optimist Club working to make the fishing derby a success. Approximately 17 special needs students and 57 adults participated. The participants and their families caught numerous bluegills, bass and trout to make this a memorable occasion.
After a pot luck luncheon which included hot dogs and covered dishes, the participants received prizes for the most fish caught, the largest fish caught and other prizes from a raffle.
The Austintown Optimist Club is thankful to all those who participated and especially the Lake Milton Fish and Game Club for the use of their facility, including Les’s Baits of Deerfield. Members of the game club along with members of the Austintown Optimist Club helped with scoring the catch and cooking for the luncheon. Les’s Baits of Deerfield at Berlin lake donated the bait used during the fishing derby.
