Fire forces school, home evacuations in California

Published: Wed, April 30, 2014 @ 2:58 p.m.

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (AP) — Schools and homes are being evacuated as dry, gusty winds fan a smoky wildfire in the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains in California.

The blaze broke out today, sending smoke billowing over the city of Rancho Cucamonga, where at least two schools have been shut down.

Evacuations also have been ordered for a neighborhood near the blaze, but it wasn’t immediately clear how many people or homes were affected.

Wind gusts of 60 mph have been reported.

Meanwhile, San Diego County sheriff’s officials say a handful of residents evacuated their homes when a fire broke out in a riverbed near a golf course in Santee. The fire was contained about an hour later.
