UPDATE: Tressel, 2 others named as finalists for YSU prez

Published: Mon, April 28, 2014 @ 3:33 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown State University Presidential Search Advisory Committee has identified these three finalists for the position. They are:

• Mary Cullinan, president and professor of English, Southern Oregon University.

• Gary L. Miller, chancellor, University of North Carolina Wilmington.

• James P. Tressel, executive vice president for Student Success, University of Akron.

The three finalists will visit campus the week of May 5 for interviews and open forums.

"We believe we have a highly qualified group of final candidates, and we look forward to them traveling to Youngstown, visiting our campus and meeting the people of the university and the community," said Sudershan K. Garg, chair of the YSU Board of Trustees.

In all, 37 individuals applied for the position. The Search Committee, comprised of nine members of the YSU Board of Trustees and two student members, interviewed six candidates Friday and Saturday via video-conferencing.

Well, here it comes again!! Tressel, the cheater, the liar, the disgraced....coming home to roost!! And what a perfect roost (the Mahoning Valley) for such an "honorable" man. I put the word "honorable" in quotations, to highlight the sarcasm in such a statement. How this person, with such a disgraceful background and questionable character flaws could ever be considered, let alone be the leader of any institution that has a major impact on the young people of this community, is beyond me. But, as I stated many times earlier, the Mahoning Valley will never shake the tarnished reputation it has, when it continues to put people like Tressel on a pedestal. Apparently the people of this area have short memories of our illustrious former congressman, judges and myriads of other political leaders who have fallen from grace, like Tressel has. For some reason, words like "honor", "integrity" and "truthfulness" don't have any meaning when being considered for leadership positions in the Mahoning Valley. What a sad requiem for this area.

HAM117: I don't think that Notorius_Pig is up for consideration for the YSU position, and I can confirm that I am not...therefore our lives, nor our backgrounds are in question in reference to this matter. Also, the sooner that the people of this Valley realize that we need to put the past behind us, and strive to elect, hire, or promote persons who can at least use the word "integrity" in descibing themselves, the better off the Valley will be.

Apologies to whomever "HAM117" is, my comments were meant to be directed to "HAM711".

I'm pretty intrigued by Gary Miller. If Tressel didn't get the job and we hired Miller, I wouldn't have a single complaint. I want nothing to do with Mary Cullinan though.

Hmmm Cullinan is coming off of a vote of no confidence from her faculty senate at Oregon, Miller is mysteriously job hunting at YSU and Buffalo after only 3 years on the job, and then there's Tressel. Nice job Board of Trustees--be proud that you did the search "as quickly and as cheaply as possible"

and could we please stop calling it the Presidential Search Advisory Committee--it's the entire Board of Trustees with no faculty, community or staff representation.

The "Valley" at it's finest once again. The area is and will be the laughing stock of the State of Ohio and beyond. Keep voting the one party and this idiotic stuff will continue to happen.

Tressel is the only one that can save this university right now, especially financially. You idiots act like he murdered somebody at O$U, where he was thrown under the bus by Gordon Geek and his minions. It's typical Youngstown to trash someone without having a viable alternative.Chessiedad--if you're not happy here, pack it and move. And Wahoo--being a university prez today IS about raising money--you can hire any egghead with a PhD to run academics. But schools are drowning in debt. Tressel will eliminate that debt.

Because all of those deep pockets like Zoldan are going to give money for academic programs--yeah right.

None of these three is worthy of being the President of a University with any integrity. Cullinan and Miller are academic nomads, desperately seeking any high-paying job in academe they could land; such folks are a dime a dozen. Tressel has absolutely no qualifications for the job. Curiously there's this myth out there that he will magically eliminate the YSU debt by attracting beaucoup bucks. Really? Where the evidence for that? Besides, if the main function of a university president these days is to raise funds, then why not just hire a high-priced prostitute as Prez? YSU is in for some even tougher times.

the trustees are intimidated by the "movers and shakers" who, mostly don't even donate to ysu. just another example of corruption in the Mahoning valley. who will you blame if you send people like dr. Abraham away and hire a football coach and the university goes down. students can only afford so much. what tressel did at osu was no small matter and anyone who thinks it was is an idiot.

The naysayers here are either individuals holding a PhD and whose world-view only honors those with the same OR someone working on the behalf of the University of Akron to deride even the possibility of the former OSU coach from getting tapped for this position.

Rust, You actually believe U of Akron has people working the vindy chat to discourage YSU's hiring of Tressel ?

this is a win win situation for 'ol jimbo. if ua kicks him to the curb he can always settle for the ysu job. it's also a win win for ysu which will get a faux president and have him help out with the football team.

The good coach Tressel will surely get offered the job at YSU at least, as it is clear that the BoT is letting the valley puppeteers run the show.

The real question is whether he will pick Akron if offered both jobs.

Randy Dunn - what a disaster!!

A university's goal is to prepare student to productive white-collar employees in various industries. I've never seen a Ph.D program that focuses on the specific point. Ph.D are great and they prepare you well for focused, narrowed and research type careers, but 95% of students will pursue opportunities outside of the three points that make Ph.Ds great.

The key skills needed to being a University President are understand how to rally the people around you to making students successful. The requires extreme charm and charisma for the ability to market your University programs to potential employers. Also it requires the ability to support and understand students goals outside of their academic life. Lastly, the ability to recognize trends for where student will have and create opportunities.

I'm okay with having a non-traditional candidate as finalist. To really make a huge impact you have to be an outside of the box thinker. Traditional thinking has left many American universities falling behind the rest of the world.

I don't understand how some people think "Tressel" is going to save YSU. Want more enrollment at the university? Quit increasing the tuition every month.
