UPDATE | Tressel will be interviewed for YSU presidency

Published: Thu, April 24, 2014 @ 12:35 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN

Besides Jim Tressel, the former Youngstown State University and Ohio State University head football coach, the list of six candidates to be interviewed for the YSU presidency includes:

Gayle L. Ormiston, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va;

Mary Cullinan, president and English professor, Southern Oregon University;

Gary L. Miller, chancellor, University of North Carolina-Wilmington;

D. Marshall Porterfield, director of Space Life and Physical Sciences Division Human Exploration Mission Directorate, NASA Headquarters;

and Steven M. Rothstein, of Watertown, Mass., president, Perkins School for the Blind.

Tressel, who is also a finalist for the presidency at the University of Akron, has worked as that university’s executive vice president for student success since 2012.

YSU trustees plan to interview the six candidates via Skype this weekend and narrow the list to three finalists who will visit campus.

I'm surprised!

No Abraham?

Oh yeah, Tressel took credit for all of his work!

What happens when the good coach Tressel gets the job in Akron?

This is pretty obvious Dr. Martin Abraham is going to be the next provost. A move I personally agree with and like.

Abraham was finalist for provost at Northern Illinois. Though it would be wise to try and keep him here in that same position(provost). Offer Tress the president now. Let him decide whether he stays at Akron or accepts YSU

I would have been fine with Dean Abraham as president, but if the committee thinks they can get Tressel, he and the Dean would make a nice Pres/Provost combination.

I've come to the conclusion that the appointed members of the Board of Trustees have been given a directive from the State to do what they can to destroy the University status of Youngstown State and have it become a local Community College. One of the finalist is the Director of Space Life for NASA?!!! To coin a Jim Traficant phrase, "beam me up Scotty"is all that needs to be said...

Tressel is on Akron's and Youngsown's short lists to placate the wealthy and the delusional. No one in their right mind would choose a football coach to be president of a university, especially over the tremendously qualified individuals who are also on the lists. It's a joke!

It was very surprising that the BoT overlooked Dr. Martin Abraham for some on this list. Rothstein appears to have no higher ed experience and has an MBA, not a PhD. Cullinan recently had a vote of "no confidence" from faculty at her institution. Gary L. Miller has only been chancellor of UNCW for TWO years...there has to be a story behind that. The NASA guy...seriously? That leaves Tressel and Ormiston (who appears to be a solid candidate.) Leads you to wonder if the BoT isn't stacking the deck in favor of Tressel, doesn't it? I'm shocked, I say...shocked!!!!
