Tressel applies for YSU presidency

Published: Fri, April 11, 2014 @ 4:08 p.m.

It’s official. Jim Tressel has applied to become Youngstown State University’s ninth president.

Tressel, former YSU and Ohio State University football coach, applied Friday for the job, confirmed Jamie Ferrare, president of AGB Search, the firm leading the search for YSU’s next president. Monday is the application deadline.

Tressel of Medina, who has worked since 2012 as executive vice president for student success at the University of Akron, also applied last month to be president at that university.

Done deal! Now the big money people that signed the letter to get him here now have to get out their checkbooks to support the institution. Tressel will then need to get to Columbus and publicly get in the ear of Kasich to quit giving everything to tOSU and help the smaller state schools. This is good hopeful news for the area and my alma mater.

Boy I hope billdog doesn't have a YSU degree. Reading his post is like one of those Sunday Parade magazine "how many grammar errors can you spot." Tressel is exactly what YSU needs. In today's world a university president must be a fundraiser first and everything else second. None better than him. And ALL of the big money people are behind him. He's the only one that can save YSU now.....

So, since all applicants are treated equally (according to the Board of Trustees Prez), we can expect a similar article for every other applicant. Yeah, right. If a football coach with no academic credentials can become a University Prez, can a scholar with no athletic experience become a varsity football coach? Or are the standards for a football coach higher at YSU than for a Prez?

in my opinion they want tressel in order to raise a lot of money to enable ysu to get into the mid-american conference..maybe by applying tressel is trying to force akrons hand.

Mr. Tressel, while best known as being a "coach" is not limited by that description.

The critics and naysayers regarding Mr. Tressel's ability have little experience hiring executives, or judging a candidates talents.

Attis, a football coach with NO academic credentials? He has none? Really? Then you ask a question if the standards are higher for a football coach than a Prez. The standards for each position are different, one is not higher than the other, furthermore, what relevance would it have if the standards were higher to Tressel's ability to carry out the Prez's duties.. This is not some civil service exam where the promotion goes to the candidate with the highest score.

If Jim is accepted as president, time will tell if that was a good choice.

Give him a chance.

When he becomes president will he officially endorse that Sammarone crony as Probate Judge. Afterall football in this Valley gives you all the credentials no matter the job. Football for life in this joke of an area!

Badeepster....100% agree with your comments. Thank you. And 'nabby'..BRAINS? Please. Poor grammar is the first-line indicator of lack thereof. PS...Indeed...Tressel is poised like none other to raise money - imperative as a university president!

Some of you should win an award for stupidity because of your comments. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. I say Tressel learned his lesson and definitely would be an attraction to the Youngstown area. I believe that Jim Tressel is a good man and he will motivate the students and faculty at YSU. Hire him.

The YSU board needs to do their homework on the probability of longevity in the presidency of their candidates. Dun leaving after just 7 months did more damage to the YSU image than what hiring a non-qualified candidate would ever do. The board should have had a better sense that Dunn was not going to last long based upon his roots. Tressel is an alumni of Akron, his wife an alumni of YSU. Either institution will at least find longevity/stability by hiring Jim. You cannot be an attractive choice to students/parents as a college that's known to change Presidency every year or two. The town of Youngstown, while trying to make progress and succeeding in some areas, is declining and has a black mark against it--it needs to pull out all the stops to get back to where it deserves to be.

What a shame. This will be the final piece in the destruction of the city of Youngstown. An unqualified crook in charge of YSU. That must be making the crooks so happy. All they have on Tressel will guarantee that they can get their hands on YSU and bleed it dry just like they did the city. The final nail in the coffin for the area is about to be hammered into place.

It looks like all of you Tressel backers are going to get your man. Keep this in mind. Be Careful Of What You Wish For. Also, is he really qualified?

Or perhaps he hopes to be more attractive to Akron if he puts his bid in at YSU...

Calling Tressel a crook is a bit strong, but he did bend, blink at, twist and otherwise ignore rules at OSU and was fired for it. Anywhere else this would disqualify you for such a position. But, in Youngstown..... maybe not.

It will be very interesting to see if Y S U's leadership team is willing to hire a person who lacks a PhD or earned doctorate to be an 'academic' leader.

It's also interesting that coach tressel isnt interested in politics, as in running for congress. Some former coaches and athletes have done so with some success (see: Tom Osborne-Jack Kemp-Dave Bing etc.)

YSU's enrollment numbers are down due largely to the emergence of EGCC. Like to the tune of 2,500 students. We'll see how he does, should the trustees decide to give (some of) the public what it wants.

I hope tresses gets the job and YSU saves the 109k they wasted finding Dunn, what a waste! Quit raising the tuition every year!
