Sheriff major injured in truck crash

Published: Wed, April 9, 2014 @ 3:14 p.m.

WARREN

Major Harold Firster of the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office suffered minor injuries in a collision with a semi tractor at 8:06 a.m. today.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol, which investigated the accident, said Firster was westbound on U.S. Route 422 in a 2010 Ford F-150 pickup truck and attempting to stop a vehicle that was involved in a pursuit that began in Warren.

A 2008 Peterbuilt semi driven by Norman Beitzer, 57, of Warren, was eastbound on Route 422 near Anderson Anthony Road, Warren Township, at the time of the collision.

The highway patrol said Firster had made a left turn into the crossover at Anderson Anthony in an effort to cut off the pursuit vehicle, and Beitzer moved from the right lane to the left lane.

The collison occurred as Firster pulled partially into the left lane of Route 422 eastbound. Beitzer was not injured. Firster and Beitzer were wearing seat belts. Firster, 64, of Warren, refused treatment at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.

now that makes a lot of sense... in a Ford 150 pick up truck... was he in a uniform.... and why was he using his personal vehicle... or was it a county vehicle... I guess its better to blame a ghost than admit you had your head in your rear... I bet he was drinking coffee and eating a donut...

I'm guessing your name "INTEL" isn't short for "INTELLIGENT"

Nevertheless, I hope Beitzer isn't made into a scapegoat here. The story is already geared that way - "The highway patrol said Firster had made a left turn into the crossover at Anderson Anthony in an effort to cut off the pursuit vehicle, and Beitzer moved from the right lane to the left lane." Yeah, he drive the semi into the left lane - he probably never dreamed the idiot in the pickup truck would pull out in front of him. Firster is at fault for the wreck - Beitzer was obeying all traffic laws and did nothing wrong. Wait and see how it plays out, though. . . .

So as the OSP investigates they will be looking at how to blame somebody other than this officer for crossing over into another vehicles lane.
