Customers at Nemenz IGA, 655 Creed St., now don’t have far to travel to pick up a pizza or to grab a drink.
About three weeks ago, the supermarket added a Maka Mia Pizza shop, plus a bar carrying draft and bottled beers and wine to its offerings.
The pizza shop and bar take the place of a First Place Bank, which closed when Talmer Bank and Trust purchased the company, said owner Henry Nemenz. He added that he’s had an on-premise beer and wine license since purchasing the store in 1980.
“We never used that license, so I said, ‘We might as well put a bar in,’” Nemenz said. “Nowadays, with all the competition in the marketplace, we have to do something new and different to create more interest in the store.”
Nemenz said he was inspired by the bars located in almost 100 Whole Foods markets across the country, and noted that “99 percent of the comments [about the pizza shop and bar] have been very positive.”
