Guests at the Feb. 24 meeting of the Rotary Club of Austintown were the Fitch indoor track stars, who received another donation from the club for expenses to attend the National Indoor Competition in New York City in March. This is a private event and cannot use school money, though it is school sanctioned. The indoor track team has placed well in previous contests.
The speaker of the day was Gordon Cleal who is a band instrumental repair specialist in Boardman. He strictly deals with woodwinds and brass instruments from his Market Street location. Cleal deals with schools and individuals, as well as other music stores.
Retired band directors Ken Alexander and Tony Cebriak visit schools on his behalf, offering experience and resources to current directors. He also appraises donated instruments for tax purposes that are donated to schools. Cleal mentioned the much higher prices for instruments as a change since he started the business more than 25 years ago.
