YOUNGSTOWN

Valley black leaders used harsh words against not only Mahoning County Democratic Chairman David Betras’ decision to remove three African-Americans from the party’s executive committee but how it was handled.

“It seems as though in the mind of [Betras that] we are still on the plantation and should be forced to do what he wants, and not what we believe is good for our community,” said the Rev. Kenneth L. Simon, chairman of the Community Mobilization Coalition and an organizer of Wednesday’s news conference.

The leaders, surrounded by about 100 supporters, sharply criticized Betras, who is white, for removing Councilwoman Annie Gillam, D-1st; her husband, Artis Gillam Sr.; and Councilman T.J. Rodgers, D-2nd; from the executive committee.

The three learned about their removal from an article in Friday’s Vindicator.

The three were removed because they support DeMaine Kitchen, a black independent candidate for Youngstown mayor, and not John McNally IV, who is white and the Democratic candidate.

“The days of Kunta Kinte” are over, Artis Gillam Sr. said. “The master doesn’t tell me what to do.”

When told of the comments from the Rev. Mr. Simon and Gillam, Betras said: “This is not a race issue with me. Those are not worthy of a response. That’s ridiculous. They’re not going to race-bait me. You can say a lot about Dave Betras, but I’m not a racist. That’s insulting and not worthy of a response.”

Betras also is moving ahead with removing Artis Gillam Sr. as the city’s 1st Ward district leader, which can be done by a majority vote of the party’s officers, and has called for Jaladah Aslam, the party’s vice chairwoman of labor relations, who is black, to resign because she doesn’t publicly support McNally. Aslam refuses to resign, and Gillam said he isn’t interested in being involved in the party if Betras is chairman.

Betras is receiving support from Ohio Democratic Chairman Chris Redfern, who is white, and former state Rep. Sylvester D. Patton, who is black and the county party’s vice chairman of minority affairs.

“Chairman David Betras is among the most talented and dedicated party leaders in the country,” Redfern said. “His actions this week reflect his deep commitment to the values we all share as Democrats. I support Chairman Betras without hesitation.”

Patton said, “This isn’t about race. It’s about loyalty, integrity, and having the courage to do what’s right, even in the most difficult or challenging circumstances. Like the vast majority of the members of the [party], I support the chair and appreciate his dedication to our party and its candidates.”

Annie Gillam and Rodgers said Betras never asked who they supported before they were ousted.

Along with Gillam’s husband, they said Wednesday that they back Kitchen, the mayor’s chief of staff and secretary.

Annie Gillam said she would have resigned “if I’d have thought about it. If he called me, I would have done so. The way he did it is what I take issue with.”

Rodgers said the “situation could have been handled a lot better. I never received a call from Dave Betras before or after.”

Gillam’s husband said he told Betras he was supporting Kitchen in a telephone conversation and the chairman didn’t say anything about it. Betras denies that call took place.

When asked why he didn’t call them and remove them privately, Betras said: “They all know my position. I’ve said it repeatedly, and they know that if they openly defied not backing the party nominee, I’d remove them.”

Mr. Simon said Betras’ decision to “publicly reprimand and embarrass” the three is causing a “division in the [Democratic] Party” and has “offended and outraged the African-American community.”

Blacks “have been loyal to the Democratic Party even though we are constantly and consistently overlooked in consideration for party elected positions,” he said.

Betras said he’s appointed more minorities to the party’s executive committee than any previous Mahoning County Democratic chairmen.

“What my critics either don’t understand or are purposely ignoring is the fact that I could care less about a particular candidate’s race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation or economic status,” he said. “What matters to me is party affiliation, period.”

Sonny Morgan, vice chairman of the Youngstown Warren Black Caucus, which endorsed Kitchen for mayor and has Aslam as its president, said he was “appalled by what” Betras did. “Next thing we’re going to do is fire” him as chairman, he said.

Others called on Betras to apologize and reinstate the committee members. Betras said he stands by his decision.

Except for a public outburst with county Treasurer Dan Yemma, Betras has quietly removed people from the executive committee or accepted their resignations in the past when they publicly backed a non-endorsed party candidate.

“They should be handled behind closed doors,” Mr. Simon said.

As slick as atty Betras is, you'd think he could have handled this better. However, Reverend Simon is comming off as a low rent Al Sharpton, who sees racists behind every bush, especially when there is any political/financial advantage to be had by pointing at the bush.

I got a race card on EBAY last week and I'm using it now. Blacks are always looking to circumvent the rules or the laws.
And another thing. Wasn't that Gillam that got over 100K from the taxpayers to show minorities what a hammer, shovel, hoe and pitchfork look like and used for. Ya, a lot good that did Stu. We read they use hammers to hit heads not nails, and pitchforks are used as a triton weapon like in the Kirk Douglas movie "Spartacus". And a hoe, well maybe I won't go there. I just read some guy in Boardman found one on Markets St. He ended up losing his gun and car.

It is great when the Black citizens in this county can play the race card. This is better when we let the Mob run the city. Let's wait and see if all the big Black leaders decend on our city. Now you know why Youngstown gets the bad rap from outsiders.

The race card is alive and well not only in Youngstown but all over the country. Dave Betras supports only Democrats, that's his job. Period. Politicos knew that before they took the job. All of a sudden someone runs on the Independant ticket because they don't think they can win any other way and they're surprised when it comes back to bite them in the ass. Let's face it, Youngstown will never be the same. The mills, jobs and respectability are all gone and will never come back. It's business as usual. Luckily I got out and will never go back. So sad to see so much promise and so little respectability left.

The blacks want their mayor in office. Their interests are better served with one of their own. Far too many black families in Youngstown are suffering for various reasons the most prominent of which is economic. Betras has drawn the battle lines and the black community is not going to back down. Like it or not they feel that Kitchen can better relate to their plight. They are not going to support one not of their choosing.

Take a good look at the picture for this story. I see a crowd of people, 3 of which actually look dressed to go to work. But as you read the story you will note that those three individuals consist of a Reverend, Councilman, and a Community Organizer. The Rev doesn't pay taxes and takes from the church, councilman works till noon then goes home, and of course the community organizer was called for duty today after months of couch surfing and entitlement collecting.

Yesterday I said I have always be a loyal democrat, but I will not be disrespected by Mr. Betras. We must unite and together we can get the respect we deserve.

Now Mr.Betras master, Chris Redfern, comes in to add insult to us and support devildog Betras.

Next year we must support Gov. Kasich and show no man or his master controls and tells us what to do.

If Mr. Betras wont reinstate our brothers and sisters we must protest and send a clear message. All my brothers and sisters, unite and boycott Betras Kopp and Harshman.

Everyone join us and from now until eternity boycott Betras Kopp and Harshman, we must show the man he cant disrespect us, no he cant.

We must also boycott his wife Dr. Pam Barkett the dentist. If that dont send the message to show respect then we need to go to a higher power.

I want to support our leader Jaladah Aslam and I hope she is our next chairwoman.

If kitchen was white, they would not have broken ranks to back him. This is a group of racists who will not suffer at all for these actions. They can say what they want but race is the only reason. They are also supporting an individual running for office who while gainfully employed he wouldn't pay his taxes.

This is most certainly about racists but Dave Betras is not one of them. When I check the BOE results for the DEMOCRATIC primary this past spring, I see that John McNally won by a scant few votes over Jamal Tito Brown, who I believe is canadian. I didn't see the name "Kitchen" on the primary ballot but he wants to run as an independent. That is all OK but, if you are on an an Exexcutive Committee for the Mahoning County Democratic Party, you took an oath to follow the bylaws. That means you MUST support the candidate that won the primary and is now the ENDORSED candidate. If you don't, what is the purpose of the primary?!?!? You should be summarily removed so you can throw all of your support behind your independent. If you are left on the committee, what would stop you from scuttling the party's plans for supporting the endorsed candidate? Sure, Betras is a slimy, loud-mouthed ambulance chaser that loves to hear himself speak, not unlike the Bull Moose. But, I have never seen him in public advocating anything racist, sexist, or homophobic. In fact, the committees have many minorities, women and homosexuals on them. Every one of those people on that stage is a blatant racist.

It won't matter anyway. McNally will win the mayor's race, be indicted on corruption charges, resign, and the coucil president will become mayor. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

I find it amusing that so many members of the executive committee of the Democratic Party are walking away from McNally. Let's be honest McNally is the big money candidate and that is why Betras was elected as Chairman of the Party. It was recognized that Betras was one of the few people who could get a cash infusion for the Mahoning County Dem Party. You reap what you sow. I have no doubt that Walter Sobchak's analysis is 100% on spot. In the end McNally is going to cost the Dem party a pantload of money and a total loss of credibility. You got to love how the FBI is screwing with the city of Y-town.

Betras should have handled the firing better and he needs to admit that. However, the Gillams need to understand that you can't be on the Democratic committee and not support your candidate. Either do the job or make way for someone who will. The Gillams should have been adult enough to resign their positions and support Kitchen.

It's also worth noting that none of these candidates is going to make a good mayor.

This is simply amazing as written. While the basic facts are true, why was the black/white equation added to this?
Let's enforce that this about race. Say something enough, it becomes a "truth". That is only true for the protesting groups. Betras has booted whites in the past for this same scenario. Documented history. Like it or not, that's the way it is.

proven to have done anything (yet). Kitchen appears to have no fiscal responsibility with his own money.

"With all of the investigations going on, and a race war about to erupt, the party leaders should call a meeting of the Central Committee to remove Betras as Chairman and settle things down."
So bow down to the angry black mob? No. It's about time cases are based on merit and fact, not feelings and political correctness and threats of violence.

When the Democrats have to put a Racism label on their own cesspool doings, because that sounds better than what the little turds are REALLY up to, I guess things must be in a real mess. You brought this on your own selves and us poor voters have to hold our nose and go to the polls. We must deserve it for living here. This little hater terrier leading this pack of greedy hyenas to the tax payer's pockets is what this is. What kind of candidates did we think would come out of this mess? When one is no worse than another, this McNally being white just ain't the whole problem folks. Here's the real problem - is this the best one that floated to the top of this cesspool? Most folks can't come up with one good reason why McNally is the candidate and "white" is all they got left. There isn't any other quality on the list, other than kowtowing - which they all do. I guess I'm as racist as the next person, maybe more, but it does seem to be a lot harder to keep a lid on it when you can't find any better reason for this choice. Now I'm white, but I don't blame these folks one bit. If they had picked Al Sharpton for president, I'd had a whole lot more problem than I'm having now with Obama. Works both ways. This McNally is one step ahead of federal evidence laws and this is the best you came up with? As long as we put these hyenas in charge of politics here, this is what kind of people they're going to pick to hand out our tax money to them and their friends. If the Repubs had half a brain, they'd hold their nose and get in there and field a good guy, no use hoping there though

Here's what's wrong with Kitchen - same thing as what's wrong with McNally. Only way anyone could vote for either one them is skin color. Just ain't no other rationale. Oh - but folks should vote for McNally because Mr. Betras says so? Hahaha. One's one-step ahead of federal evidence rules and the other wants to handle folk's tax money, but not pay his taxes, and isn't even embarrassed. I don't know if voters deserve better, but they sure as heck need better. Here we have these hyenas scrapping over the near-empty trough while this town circles the drain. Sure getting ugly. We could wish for better than these choices coming out of that cesspool of hyenas, but that would be a waste of time. No decent person would rub elbows with that mess and putting a nasty twerp like Betras in there only brought out the worst in folks. These hyenas got too busy fighting for scraps and forgot to look outside the cesspool and remember there are voters out there. Just like you just did.

Face it kids. There will ALWAYS be a racial divide in Youngstown. ALWAYS. And it's easy to understand why; the lifestyles of the poor black neighborhoods are not understood or accepted by the hard working, hard drinking white people of Youngstown. Crime, drugs and filth disgust most white people. If a black doctor moved in next door to me, I'd be OK with that. If a welfare crackhead walking around outside in his pajamas moved in next door, I'd be calling a realtor. These are the facts. Wear any face you want to wear in public. On the inside everyone knows this is the case.

There are no good candidates. Kitchen can't explain what's going on with these allegations and McNally won't explain why he was under indictment or whether those charges could be be reinstated if he is elected.

Race isn't the issue in this election. Competency is the real issue.

The problem in the area is that crime and dishonesty is the norm. I feel that people need a candidate that has a competency level and that is going to make a change. Everyone is making this about race. We need to remove this from everything. We are people for progress or people of neg progress an it needs to stop.

I have finally decided to comment after reading so many negative comments by readers and by Mr. DeSouza referencing all blacks as being on the take. I am a college graduate who has worked full time for the last 45 years and loved every minute of it. I am not a native Youngstowner, but I have found Youngstown to have some of the kindest, friendliest, most hardworking, most trustworthy, most hopeful, meanest, unfriendliest, most adverse to work, most untrustworthy, and most hopeless people (black and white) ever. I live in a beautiful Youngstown neighborhood where my neighbors are black and white. A large percentage of my black neighbors are professionals who take excellent care of their properties, but the value of our properties have been diminished because of the whites who keep junked cars in their driveways, don't paint their houses when needed, keep garages full of junk and let the doors remain open for all to see, let gutters fall off of the houses to never be replaced, don't keep their grass cut and don't trim shrubbery. The value has also been diminished due the blacks who do all of the above also. For those of you who would put everyone in the same pot, remember it works both ways. I am a REALIST.

Arealist, I Agree with you, it does work both ways. I wont travel into youngstown because of all the Violence in that City, I lived In warren Till I started Having Kids Then I moved Out of Warren for Good. I live very close to warren and we have the same problems with Drugs & violence. Most of my neighbors keep up there Property, But my Neighbor that use to live Next Door were Pigs and They are White As I am. But Ive seen Black Neighborhood that is Horrid. I think Both Races Needs To Take Pride In there Homes as well as There Property. This Race Card Is Out of Control. No Matter If There Right or Wrong Race Is always put in it. I have One Black Friend That Works His Butt Off To Make Ends Meat Even With his asthma being out of Control ... Now My Son has A friend Who is Black, Well Educated, Very Respectful, & polite His Parents are Doctors and He Sells Drugs.plus he has 8 kids by different women he does not support. Now My Ex is White he Has 6 kids he never supported Its in any Race, I'm so sick Of this Race card. The Poor Black's always getting Treated wrong But they Can call us White Ho's, Hunkies, white trash, and So on and we cant call a discrimination card... I was Born In Cleveland, When I was a Little Kid we were Walking with our mother Going To The Store, My Mom had a baby buggy with 2 kids in it and i was walking a black man grabbed her from behind by the throat. She Acted like She Fainted He Ran, She Grabbed us All and Ran Back To our Apartment. so our dad moved us out of Cleveland.. A white guy broke in our house took money & a pistol. There Is Bad In Every Race No Matter if Your Black, White,Red, Brown Or Yellow. So All You Blacks Need To Grow Up and Stop Pulling Your Race Card. The Only Race That Should Call discrimination in This Country is The Native American's Until They Are No Longer Prisoners Of The USA, since this is there Country. Everyone else is Immigrant that Migrated here.Blacks Have It easy Compared to Native Americans Go to a Reservation especially in S. Dakota and See who is Treated Wrongly because of Race, and There Beliefs.Walk 1 mile in there shoes and see .

gee the blacks don't want to follow rules...go figure! LOL And those swollen bellies are followed by more swollen bellies, and more, and more, and more. No baby daddies there either. Just like here in the US, only they have no entitlements yet. Sound famililar? Gee not to change the subject, but have any black organizations come forward to have "hate" crimes leveled against the latest round of blacks killing whites for no reason? I'll answer that for you NOOOOO! Where's Eric Holder now??? Oh that's right it would look bad for blacks god forbid!! Get real people! I'm glad that finally people are speaking up and are tired of the SOS from this group.
