Rev. Thompson to be feted at retirement banquet

A banquet at 5 p.m. Oct. 15 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel hall in Youngstown will honor the Rev. Roosevelt Thompson Jr. on his retirement.

The Rev. Mr. Thompson received a license to preach at Faith Temple Baptist in 1974. He was called to pastor at First Baptist Church in January 1981.

Mr. Thompson and his wife, Lena, are natives of Alabama and have lived in the Youngstown area since 1956. They have five adult children and five grandchildren.

Pastor Thompson earned a bachelor of arts degree from Central Baptist Bible College and studies at Moody Bible Institute, American Baptist Theological Seminary, Youngstown State University, Jasper Williams Ministry in Atlanta, National Baptist Congress of Christian Education, Ohio Peace Office Training Academy and W.H.W. Ministry in California.

Pastor Thompson is a past director general and treasurer of Eastern Ohio Baptist Association.

He has been involved in community and civic organizations including board of directors of Tobin Center Chaplaincy Department, vice president of Wellsville Ministerial Alliance, Board of Common Wealth, Youngstown Police Department’s chaplains and parliamentarian of Ohio Valley Missionary Union.

Pastor Thompson has been honored by Ohio Baptist State Laymen’s Movement, John Washington Lodge No. 92, Village of Wellsville’s Mayoral Award for Excellence and civic award from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

He is the owner and director of a funeral escort business.
