Planning panel OK’s Chevron’s W. Pa. drilling HQ

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A Pittsburgh-area township’s planning commission has unanimously recommended a zoning change that would enable Chevron to build a regional headquarters to oversee Marcellus shale natural gas drilling.

Chevron’s Appalachian unit in May announced the agreements to purchase 61 acres in Moon Township, about 10 miles west of downtown Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports the planning commission voted for the zoning change Wednesday night, meaning the panel recommends it be approved by township supervisors.

The zoning change from commercial to mixed use includes limits on the size of a testing laboratory and on the kind and quantity of chemicals that could be used there.

Chevron is one of the largest producers of Marcellus natural gas, with holdings in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio.

The site formerly housed a Kmart store.
