CANFIELD

Perennials are the best.

They keep coming back every year. They bloom for several weeks. They do not need protection when the frost threatens in the spring. They are nearly carefree.

But what perennials are low maintenance? Which have the best blooms?

To get the answers to those questions and others, plan on attending our perennial plant school, which will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm, 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road.

The cost is $20 and includes handouts with detailed information to use in your garden. Print the registration form from our website go.osu.edu/plantschool.

Conducting the school will be Pam Bennett, an associate professor and state master gardener volunteer coordinator for Ohio State University Extension.

She has been doing field trials in Springfield, Ohio, since 1995. These evaluations have covered more than 200 varieties of perennial plants.

Besides conducting consumer and commercial horticulture programs, she writes a weekly gardening column and lectures frequently on a variety of horticultural topics.

In addition, she has had many years of retail garden center management experience.

Perennial school participants will gain an understanding of the best perennials based on work at Bennett’s research gardens. She will teach you all the tricks of the trade to have the best and most-beautiful plants.

In general, perennial gardens require less maintenance than those with annual flowers. They require less fertilization, and most of the time, less or even no watering throughout the growing season.

A perennial garden should start with site selection. Some perennials are shade loving, others require full sun. For information on growing perennials and planning your perennial garden, go to go.osu.edu/plantgarden.
