Pavlik faces theft charge

Published: Thu, September 19, 2013 @ 12:07 a.m.

By joe gorman

Kelly Pavlik was charged with theft Wednesday after a cabdriver told a Mahoning County deputy sheriff that the former boxing champion failed to pay his $25 cab fare after he gave him a ride home from a South Meridian Road bar about 2:45 a.m. Wednesday.

A sheriff’s report said Pavlik asked to be taken to his home in the 3200 block of Sugarbush Drive in Canfield. When the cabdriver dropped Pavlik off about 10 minutes after he picked him up, he told Pavlik the fee was $25.

The driver said in the report Pavlik told him he would not pay and swore at him twice before walking into his home. The driver then went to a gas station on U.S. Route 224 and called 911, reports state.

The theft charge was filed in Mahoning County Area Court in Canfield.

Later Wednesday, Pavlik said he did not want to comment much, only to say “it was a screwed-up situation.” He said the driver initially couldn’t find his house when he took him home.

He said he did not want to talk more about the incident, and added if it was reported on in The Vindicator he “will go to national media and embarrass you [the newspaper].”

Brian Bleggi, owner of the cab company, A Cab, said it was his son, Santino, who took Pavlik home. He said he has not had much trouble from people not paying their fare, and standard procedure is to get the money up front, but an exception was made for Pavlik because, he said, “It’s him.”

He said his drivers have driven Pavlik home before in similar situations.

Santino Bleggi said in a written statement attached to the deputy’s report that he knows who Pavlik is because he has seen his picture on television and around Youngstown.

His father said he received a threatening call from a blocked number but that he was not scared.

“I’m not going to let [that] intimidate me,” Brian Bleggi said.

Pavlik has had issues in the past with alcohol including a driving-under- the-influence charge in 2011. He pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of failure to control in April 2012 in the Canfield court.

He has attended a treatment program to try to get help for an alcohol problem.

Pavlik retired from boxing in January after a career that saw him become the middleweight world champion in 2007.

In 12 years as a fighter, he had a career record of 40-2 with 34 of his victories coming by knockout.

Here we go again with this piece of sh*t. He is a total disgrace from a totally dysfunctional family. This bum should crawl back into the hole he came from and leave good, hard working people alone. Stealing $25.00 from this driver is the height of arrogance. He cannot shine Boom Boom's shoes.

Is that a gay bar that he was coming from?

Why is it a crime, a misdemeanor, if a person does not pay a cab driver, but if a person goes to a dental office and does not pay after a cleaning it is not a crime? What is the difference? Both businesses are providing services.

author50, I was just going to post that. I've heard his cab company notoriously rips people off. No matter how close a drop off is coming from a bar it is $25 per drop. what are you going to do it's 3 am and you're drunk so you get ripped off.

Kelly is identified as a bum and this cab company is supposed to be noted for ripping people off, sounds like they are a good match.

Next up, Kelly will embarrass the Vindy!

Kelly needs to get his act together and start being a good role model for his kids. His biggest job now is beeing a good father. Kelly get it together please. Do what you have to do ok? The only real victims in this are the kids. Hope they aren't going to become another statisitc. I can't comment on the Bleggis but obviously they have some kind of scam going on. All around tragic end to another local hero.

Yeah, 25 bucks seems like a lot for a ride home. Kelly should have just drove himself home...again.

Keep watching, reading and listening. I am sure that there is more stupidity from Kelly to come. I hate to say it, but if he stays on his current course, a tragedy is in the future.

Where are all your Southside leaches to help pay the cab fare for you? Surely those wallet suckers kept some of that money right? Or were they all too busy reminiscing about steel mills and idora park and their high school playing days drunk off their behinds from the bar you just left.

I bet you wished you kept that 1million payday for that fight in Youngstown instead of acting like a big shot.

Go back to fighting guys in the Borts field dug outs for six packs.

And for the cab driver, you should have made his front yard look like the infield after a Daytona500 victory for short changing you.

Well from personal experience A Cab wanted to charge me 32$ to take me to the mall from my home for work which is 1.7 miles. Independent charged me 10$ for the same ride. RIP OFF!! This was because they " had to cross city lines ". what a crock....
My husband and I both know Kelly. He is an awesome person!! He is a great role model to his kids and people around him are lucky to call him a friend!! To all of you out there trash talking Kelly... Do you know him personally?? Have you ever had a conversation with him?? I'm sure that all of you sitting here judging him and name calling have surely never drank a drop of alcohol ever in your life and you have never done anything wrong ever... WRONG you have and you've been caught doing it too you just don't have the whole world watching you and judging you!! When he was out there fighting for you enjoyment and entertainment he was another hometown hero now retired you just throw him away. Him and his family don't need friends and fair-weather fans like you anyways!!!

So, LindaB., it's OK for Kelly to get hammered drunk in a bar and stiff a cab driver, because the Cab company wanted to charge YOU more than the other cab company did?? Where is your logic in that? You know Kelly, and he's been a nice guy to you, so it's ok for him to do something illegal. Hmmm, says alot about you, too...

Einstein, disguised as robin hood
And his friend, a jealous monk,
Passed this way an hour ago with
His memories in a trunk

You would not think to look at him
But he was famous long ago
For playing the electric violin
On Desolation Row

ok did this cab driver really need to call 911? getting stiffed on a cab ride doesn't seem like an emergency to me. he should be cited as well.
