Cardinal Corner

We all have busy schedules and busy lives and sometimes it can be difficult to find the time to take a moment to appreciate accomplishments. While we will never rest on our laurels here in Canfield Local Schools, it is important we congratulate students, staff and parents on their successes.

Data from the 2012-2013 school year indicates the district met all 24 indicators of success, earned an “A” for its graduation rates, overall value-added, along with value-added for students with disabilities, and achieved all-time high scores in Performance Index (107.8) and ACT Composite (23.6), giving us a ranking of 35 out of 871 scored districts throughout the state of Ohio. This is the highest ranking Canfield Local Schools has ever received.

The state indicators are achievement assessments at various grade levels and subjects. The Performance Index score measures the achievement of all students. The credit for these successes belongs in the hands of our Board of Education members, who make a strong commitment to making Canfield Schools an educational leader in the Mahoning Valley; our administrative team, who offers positive leadership on a day to day basis; our expert teaching staff, who give their heart and soul in the profession they truly love; our supportive and involved parents and last, but certainly not least, our students, who value their studies.

The state of Ohio has changed the State Local Report Card system and will no longer issue ratings such as Excellent with Distinction, but will instead issue letter grades (A, B, C, D, F) for districts and buildings. The composite letter grades will not be used until the 2014-15 school year.

The system features a number of additional components and complex calculations to arrive at a letter grade for various components, and a composite letter grade for schools and districts. The components of the new report card include Indicators Met, Performance Index, Value Added, Annual Measurable Objectives and four- and five-year graduation rates.

The new rating system also raises the bar for all districts in Ohio. Across the board, all Ohio districts are going to be in the same situation when it comes to these higher standards. Canfield welcomes this opportunity and we accept the challenge of helping out students succeed at even higher levels.

There are components of the report where the District has the opportunity to improve. Nearly every district in the State of Ohio will be receiving letter grades in certain areas of the report card which are lower than in years past due to changes in calculations and standards. We look forward to not only meeting these higher standards, but exceeding them.

It is the vision of the Canfield Local Schools to meet each student’s individual learning needs, leading to a top 10 ranking in the State of Ohio by 2017. We intend to meet this vision and have much growth throughout the district in doing so.

Have a wonderful 2013-14 school year and never forget… It’s a great time to be a Cardinal!
