Planned roundabout in Boardman to be installed in 2014

Published: Thu, September 12, 2013 @ 3:16 p.m.

POLAND — The Mahoning County commissioners approved an $1,875 contract with Bowman Appraisal Services to perform appraisals of lawn areas the county must purchase to install a one-lane roundabout (traffic circle) designed to improve traffic movement and safety at Mathews and Sheridan roads in Boardman.

The entire intersection will close for 60 to 90 days for the installation, which is planned for next summer to minimize the impact on school buses, said Patrick Ginnetti, county engineer at the commissioners’ meeting today.

Ginnetti expressed concern, however, about traffic congestion during that time as bridge work proceeds at the Interstate 680 and U.S. Route 224 interchange. Mathews Road, which goes under I-680, provides one of several available detours during the interchange project.

When the roundabout is completed, there will be no traffic lights or stop signs in the Mathews-Sheridan intersection.

What a waste of money. And the "reason" they gave for putting the roundabout there is because of frequent fender-benders a mile away, and South and Mathews. Anyone else skeptical?

Many states have them. They are quite helpful in aleviating long lines of traffic at stoplights and 4-way stops. It's not brain-surgery!

people here are too old and too stupid to use a roundabout. multiple accidents waiting to happen. just widen the intersection and put in a eastbound left turn lane and signal.

To start construction at the same time that the 224/680 construction is still going on pretty much shows a complete lack of common sense by the county engineer. Helps explain why people get so frustrated by road construction.

Roundabouts are warranted for certain intersection but not this one. Vast majority of traffic is east-west on Mathews Road as people are going to and from Poland, to avoid 224. This is purely a waste of taxpayer money just to do a demonstration project. The roundabout in Columbiana is the city center, as in many small cities. Now, a great place to do a roundabout is the "5 points" intersection in Poland as this is confusing with too many stop signs and minimal spaces between intersections. There is plenty of land and it would work well.

The FHWA has a video about modern roundabouts that is mostly accurate (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhHzly... ).
Modern roundabouts are the safest form of intersection in the world. Visit http://tinyurl.com/iihsRAB for modern roundabout FAQs and safety facts. Modern roundabouts, and the pedestrian refuge islands approaching them, are two of nine proven safety measures identified by the FHWA, http://tinyurl.com/7qvsaem
