YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State senior center Chris Elkins, a preseason All-America, is the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s offensive lineman of the week.

Elkins played 44 snaps in the Penguins’ record-setting 67-13 win over Morehead State. YSU amassed a school-record 718 yards of total offense with 359 coming both on the ground and through the air.

He earned an 88 percent grade from the coaching staff and was named the team’s offensive lineman of the game. He had a 97 percent assignment grade and posted a team-best six knock-down blocks.

It was his second career start at center for the Penguins who lead the FCS in rushing and have had three different 100-yard rushers in the first two weeks of the season. He played every snap in the win vs. Dayton to start the year.

Women’s hoops

The YSU women’s basketball team will play a school-record 17 games at Beeghly Center as part of a 2013-14 home schedule that features six doubleheaders with the YSU men’s program in head coach John Barnes’ first season.

The Penguins will welcome West Virginia and Cincinnati to campus and they’ll also host a lunch-time affair against Malone the first Monday of winter break. Highlighting the road schedule is a short trip to Akron and a contest against a Delaware team that won 32 games last year. The home and season opener will be Nov. 9, against VCU, and Horizon League play will open at Valparaiso on Jan. 9.

The six home doubleheaders will be Nov. 20, Nov. 30, Dec. 4, Jan. 18, Jan. 25 and Feb. 15. Additionally, both the YSU women and men will play at Wright State on Feb. 5 as part of a doubleheader at the Nutter Center.

“We are thrilled to be able to play so many home games in front of our fans this season,” Barnes said. “The opportunity to play teams like West Virginia and Cincinnati at home is very exciting. The non-conference schedule will definitely challenge us and hopefully prepare us for what will be a very competitive season in the Horizon League.”
