To no one’s surprise, Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” is Billboard’s song of the summer.
Billboard announced the list Thursday. Rock outfit Imagine Dragons is second with “Radioactive,” followed by Daft Punk with “Get Lucky.”
Miley Cyrus’ party anthem “We Can’t Stop” is fourth, and “Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis is fifth.
The rest of the list includes hits from Florida Georgia Line, Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars and Selena Gomez. Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick’s “Pitch Perfect” soundtrack hit, “Cups,” is ninth.
Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” also was named Spotify’s song of the summer.
Syria fears keep masterpiece in Italy
With tensions high in the Mediterranean over Syria, Italy has decided it’s not the right time to send a Botticelli masterpiece on loan to Israel.
Italy’s culture ministry said Thursday it has decided against transporting the 15th-century “The Annunciation of San Martino alla Scala” from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence to the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, where it was supposed to go on display for several months starting Sept. 17. The ministry cited geopolitical and logistical considerations.
The painting, with exquisite detail and dreamy colors, measures about 17 feet by more than 8 feet.
Panda cub is female, National Zoo reports
The Smithsonian’s National Zoo announced Thursday that its 2-week-old giant-panda cub is female, and her father is National Zoo panda Tian Tian.
Panda mother Mei Xiang was artificially inseminated with sperm from Tian Tian, as well as a panda named Gao Gao at the San Diego Zoo. It takes time to determine a cub’s gender, and a DNA sample was collected to determine the paternity of the cub born Aug. 23.
A second, stillborn cub delivered a day later also was female and sired by Tian Tian, officials said. The cubs were fraternal twins.
Keepers performed a den check Thursday morning, and all the signs show the mother and cub continue to be healthy. The cub will make her public debut in about four months.
