Gilbert wins Vuelta stage, Nibali keeps lead

TARRAGONA, Spain

World champion Philippe Gilbert won the 12th stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Thursday, and Vincenzo Nibali retained the leader’s jersey.

Gilbert, a Belgian riding for BMC, caught Edvald Boasson and moved past him in the final yards to cross first in the 102-mile stage from Maella to Tarragona on the Mediterranean coast.

Nibali provisionally maintained a 31-second lead over Nicolas Roche.

The 13th stage today remains in the northeastern region of Catalonia for a second straight flat stage, a 105-mile route from Valls to Castelldefels. The three-week race then heads back into the mountains for a trilogy of stages in the Pyrenees.

Angerer captures European player award

NYON, Switzerland

Germany goalkeeper Nadine Angerer won the inaugural Best Women Player in Europe award on Thursday.

Angerer, who will start her professional career in the United States next year, topped Germany teammate Lena Goessling and Swedish forward Lotta Schelin.

Angerer saved two penalties in the 2013 European Championship final in July, helping Germany defeat Norway 1-0.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper will play in Australia for Brisbane Roar before joining a U.S. team in the National Women’s Soccer League.

Angerer says “it’s not official yet which team I will play for, but I will start 2014 in the U.S.”

She won the UEFA award in a vote of journalists from a 10-player shortlist created by coaches from Euro 2013 and women’s Champions League teams.

Fast catamarans to race at America’s Cup

SAN FRANCISCO

Super fast and always just a mistake away from mayhem, the boats will be the stars when the 34th America’s Cup starts Saturday between defending champion Oracle Team USA and challenger Emirates Team New Zealand.

The 72-foot catamarans are powered by 131-foot mainsails that look and perform like jetliner wings. When the boats reach “takeoff speed,” both hulls pop out of the water on hydrofoils and fly across the tops of the waves on San Francisco Bay.

Oracle Team USA skipper Jimmy Spithill likens the sensation to a turbo boost.
